A useful SkillBridge program starts with a real employment opportunity and a supervisor who has time to teach. The application should describe how your company will prepare a transitioning service member for that work.

The official fall application window is October 1 through December 1, 2026. Government approval and each participant's military authorization remain separate decisions.

1. Complete the employer ethics course

The official provider page requires an Employer Ethics Course certificate dated within one year of application submission. Assign the appropriate company representatives and follow the current application instructions.

2. Build the training plan around your operation

Start with the onboarding and training you already use. Identify what the participant will learn each week and how the supervisor will check progress. Include the equipment, work setting and skills the role requires.

A training plan should help the supervisor run the program after the application is submitted. “Shadow the team” needs to become specific learning activities with regular feedback.

3. Confirm the applying entity and host locations

Gather the business records requested by the current intake application. Confirm the legal entity, authorized signer and locations where training will happen. Resolve eligibility questions against the official requirements before submitting.

VBS helps organize the application and training plans for your review. In our employer cohort, the company applies for its own agreement and accepts the responsibilities of operating its program.

4. Review the agreement before signing

Read the current memorandum of understanding with the people who will own the program. Confirm the training responsibilities, employment expectations and rules governing participant compensation and costs.

Military pay and benefits continue during authorized participation. Employers still need to budget supervision time and required training resources. VBS preparation and advisory services have a separately agreed scope and fee.

5. Submit during the official window

The provider page currently lists October 1 through December 1, 2026 for fall application enrollment. Check it again before submission because instructions can change.

Submitting an application does not establish approval or a guaranteed review date. Plan candidate outreach and staffing expectations accordingly.

6. Connect approval to candidate planning

An approved program still needs relevant opportunities and someone responsible for candidate follow-up. A directory listing alone does not build a pipeline.

The participant's command decides whether participation is authorized and the approved dates. Availability may be shorter than the program's up-to-180-day ceiling. Build the training schedule around confirmed dates.

Make the first weeks useful

Assign a supervisor and a backup. Give the participant a clear first-day schedule. Review progress regularly and discuss the path to a hiring decision early enough for both sides to plan.

If the arrangement needs to end early, follow the applicable agreement and military coordination process. Resolve responsibilities for the individual situation rather than assuming that every employer obligation disappears.

The opportunity for Wisconsin employers

Military experience can be difficult to read on a resume. A structured training program creates a practical way to develop relevant skills and evaluate readiness for real employment.

Start with the role

Bring the role you need to fill and the training you already have. We can identify what needs to be ready before you apply.

Correction note, October 1, 2026. This article replaces earlier wording about program costs, hiring obligations and Wisconsin participation counts.

Earlier versions of this article used Wisconsin host counts that were not sufficiently reconciled. Those figures have been removed. Public listings also cannot establish whether an organization has ever used its agreement.
